CHARA Contribution No. 4 (last update: April 2000)

Latest changes:

* Additional Hipparcos data (wide pairs) added
* Tycho 2 data (mostly wide pairs) added
* Discover designations changed to WDS format (i.e., from "Abc 1234" to "ABC1234")

The Third Interferometric Catalog includes all published measures of binary and multiple star systems obtained by interferometric techniques (speckle interferometry, photoelectric occultation timings, et cetera), as well as negative examinations for duplicity, as of April 2000. A brief summary of the contents of the Third Catalog is available
here.

The catalog is divided into 24 one-hour right ascension bands, as follows:

00 hrs ... 01 hrs ... 02 hrs ... 03 hrs ... 04 hrs ... 05 hrs ... 06 hrs ... 07 hrs
08 hrs ... 09 hrs ... 10 hrs ... 11 hrs ... 12 hrs ... 13 hrs ... 14 hrs ... 15 hrs
16 hrs ... 17 hrs ... 18 hrs ... 19 hrs ... 20 hrs ... 21 hrs ... 22 hrs ... 23 hrs

Reference List

The entries for each binary star system are comprised of two parts: an identification line containing designations from various catalogs, followed by individual measures sorted in order of observation date. Formats of these data have been changed slightly, and are described here.

Cross reference files (as of 12/97 - to be updated eventually) are also available. These files list various names for objects in the main catalog tables, including:

WDS - Washington Double Star designation, or epoch-2000 coordinates,
HR - Harvard Revised, or Bright Star Catalogue number,
HD - Henry Draper Catalogue number,
SAO - Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Catalogue number,
BD - Bonn Durchmusterung designation,
CD - Cordoba Durchmusterung designation,
CPD - Cape Photographic Durchmusterung designation (CP),
ADS - Aitken Double Star catalogue number,
GJ - designation from the Gliese and Jahreiss nearby star catalogues,
HIP - Hipparcos Catalogue number;
Bayer, Flamsteed, or variable star constellation name;
binary star discoverer designation; and
cluster or other miscellaneous designation.

The master cross-reference file is available HERE. Although several of the designations (HR, HD, ADS) are numbered essentially in order of RA, others are not. To make seaches for some of these other identifiers easier, the master list has also been sorted on various other columns. Other available cross-reference lists include those sorted by: SAO , BD , CD , CPD , GJ , HIP , Constellation Designation , Discoverer Designation , and Miscellaneouos Identifiers .

Thanks to Christian Martin for updating the master list to include the Hipparcos designations.

An object having a note is flagged by the highlighted word "note" following its WDS designation. Eventually, orbital elements, plotted orbits, and tables of ephemerides will be linked in a similar manner.

Your comments regarding either style or substance are welcome. Please report any errors you run across in the catalog to Bill Hartkopf ( wih@usno.navy.mil ).
