Minutes for the meeting of September 7, 2006
3:44 pm - Prez Erika gathers stuff for meeting and finds that there is still a class in the room. She determines that it is eminently desirable to have 4 pm meetings... She, Member Kevin and Member Rob hang out.
3:55 pm - class leaves and AstroClub has the floor!! Pop and miniature candy bars are consumed but not the chips... Hmmmm...
(no time record is kept from here on out...)
- Prez Erika's "observing" trip to Hawai'i is discussed ;)
- We'll have solar observing, but we will do it via a weekly Sun-checker. Member Taylor has kindly offered to do this :) He will check at the beginning of the week, notify the Club and we'll try to schedule observing if there are good sunspots :)
- Nighttime observing will be held the week of October 16 - 19. The Astronomy Lab TAs will be observing too so we can piggyback on their toting of telescopes ;) Club members who want to do more observing may contact TAs to go up with them if they so chose. Go-no go e-mail by 3 p.m.
- Movie Night is declared postponed for this month due to Halloween and laziness :)
- Telescope Construction: If we have enough people who are comfortable using routers and jigsaws and such, we will hold this on FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH at 2:30 p.m. If no takers, we'll have to wait til after January 1st when Ex-Secretary Kevin finishes his thesis.
- Treasurer Bryan reports our money and announces that there will be dues of $5 per member due by the next meeting.
- Emory will be having some planetarium shows on October 12th that are open to the public!!! See the flier in the Astronomy Department lunch room (as their website is woefully out of date).
- We special Astronomy Club people will get a special tour of the Emory Planetarium and Observatory given by Member Rob!! :) (he'll take requests) This will be on TUESDAY, October 24th at 7:30 p.m. When it gets closer, we'll send out info about it.
- Prez Erika notices that she's the only girl in the room - weird!
- Prez Erika stumbles all over her words in her excitement to talk about the Messier 10K!
- Possible dates: November 10, 11 or 12. Yes, the 12th is a Sunday but people seem willing to entertain the idea. Hopefully it will be a moot point. The next weekend is not good as it is right before Thanksgiving break.
- We plan on buying some flashlights - we'll either construct our own redness or buy some pre-fabbed ones. There will be a COMMITTEE for that :) Volunteer!
- Prez Erika has decided she wants a checklist so she may check off which Messier objects she's seen therefore we will have such a thing for everyone.
- Prez Erika admits to some foolishness in her Open House coordinating putting the HLCO Open House on the date of the New Moon (woulda been great for the 10K) and also states that because she'll be observing in Arizona next weekend (13th & 14th) we won't have it that weekend either! The benevolent dictator strikes again!
- Prez Erika hands out information regarding membership in AAVSO - although, one does not have to be a member to submit data - it's all comparative magnitudes! We have our lab students do that! We can try it out at the Messier 10K during downtime :D Or heck, even Urban Life Building observing :)
- Meeting is adjourned and Prez Erika realizes she was silly and forgot introductions for the newbie Tarik - sorry Tarik!!
In attendance: Prez Erika, Taylor, Rob, Kevin, Tarik and another drive-by appearance of Treasurer Bryan
