My Third Observing Trip!!
November 2005

The "diary" from my first run (Aug. 2004)
The "diary" from my second run (Oct. 2004)

Location: Kitt Peak National Observatory on Kitt Peak outside of Tucson, AZ
Shamelessly stolen from KPNO's website
Instruments:
Run 1 - the 0.9 meter Coudé Feed Spectrograph
Run 2 - the 2.1 m telescope (both in the same building) Shamelessly stolen from KPNO's website
Dates:
Run 1 - Tuesday, November 8 to Monday, November 14
Run 2 - Wednesday, November 16 to Wednesday, November 23, 2005
Participants:
Run 1 - me
Run 2 - Ginny McSwain and I (but Ginny leaves Monday)

Images of the glorious mountain accommodations!

For Run 1, I'm basically doing the same batch of stars that I did last year and the set-up is pretty much exactly the same as the August 2004 run - we're trying to do some time scale stuff. More later...
My telescope, the Coudé Feed and how to use it.

For Run 2, I'm helping a former GSU grad student and my former roomie with her run. She's at Yale now and ends up getting a good amount of telescope time (she has good projects). Well, for this run, she needed help because it ends right before Thanksgiving and her whole family is coming up to her place for the holiday this year.
We're also doing spectroscopy and we're looking for stars that are binary systems with one of the pair a black hole (we can't see the black hole, just it's effects). More later...
The 2.1 meter telescope and the procedure.

The Timeline:

Tuesday, November 8, 2005
5:10 a.m. - woke up
6:20 a.m. - left the house and got on MARTA and got to the airport with plenty of time :)
8:20 a.m. - plane took off (after sitting on the runway for 25 minutes), transferred in Phoenix, then a short 22 min flight to Tucson
on the ATL to PHX flight, they asked for "people with medical training" - a lady was having chest pains and shortness of breath :(
coulda gotten a free ticket as the flight was overbooked, but alas...
1:00 p.m. (MST) - got to NOAO headquarters in plenty of time for the 2 p.m. shuttle :)
3:30 p.m. - Arrived on Kitt Peak :) I'm staying in the WIYN house rather than the dorms for now :)
Got a quick little refresher on Coudé operation from Daryl
Day 1:   Click for larger picture       The daytime weather Click for larger picture not too bad...
4:45 p.m. - supper-time!! - it has to be early because the Sun is setting around 5:30 so I can start getting everything ready at that time (in time to observe at 6-ish)
5:35 p.m. - up to the scope - we had some problems because the telescope thought it was ready to go when it really wasn't or it would think it wasn't ready when it really was. Solution: reboot - it always is...
6:10 p.m. - message for DOMES CLOSED due to threatening clouds but it was rather clear above... We stayed open for a while anyways because we were having those issues with the scope - honestly, it would work, it was just a little confused...
      clouds definately got worse :(
      Angela called :)
I ended up napping for a bit ;) I was tired!!
1:30 a.m. - went outside for a minute and noticed it was clearish (but windy) - however, I never got word that I could open so I didn't.
3:00 a.m. - threw in the towel and went to bed. I found out the next day that people had opened up for a few hours between 11 and 3 but NO ONE TOLD ME!! I'm not supposed to have to call around - they send out broadcast messages usually. Dammit.
Total observing time: ~30 min
Star total: 5
My soundtrack for the night: Classical on the radio (Daryl's pick) ; sounds of irritation ; Playlist: KindaFun ; They Might Be Giants - Flood ; Angela on the phone ; U2 - Best of 1990 to 2000 ; my snores ;)

Wednesday, November 9, 2005
Day 2:   Click for larger picture       The daytime weather Click for larger picture       Click for larger picture turned out pretty nice
9:55 a.m. - Argh! I'm awake! However, I did lay in bed for an hour after that ;)
I got completely stymied by the shower :(
met Eric - the other person staying at the WIYN house with me (another grad student, from Yale) - he told me how the shower worked :)
1:00 p.m. - Lunchtime!! the food here is pretty decent, but kinda cafeteria-y
meandered up to the telescope, filled the liquid nitrogen dewar, gave a tour of it to Eric, sent a tarball of last night's data to Georgia, got stuff set up computer-wise
4:30 p.m. - Suppertime!!
The lovely sunset Click for larger picture       Click for larger picture
5:30 p.m. - up to the scope to start with the preliminaries
6:03 p.m. - official word that DOMES ARE OPEN!! I started observing and I have a TON of stars right at the beginning of the night so it was very busy
7:25 p.m. - finally turned on my laptop to check e-mail to see if I needed to add any stars (none til much later in the night)
8:10 p.m. - Daryl called to ask if everything was going well :) - right after I hung up I realized my comparison spectra weren't working - I called him back and he had me change lamps and stuff - finally we realized that I was turning the wrong switch!! USER ERROR! Idiot me :(
9:00 p.m. - got back to the stars :\
9:12 p.m. - finally turned on some music!
      Ginny called :)
I can't seem to add any of the new stars into the cache!! (the cache makes for easier and faster telescope pointing)
      Andrew called :)
5:15 a.m. - I've run out of stars to observe!! Sunrise is at 5:30 and I only have really dim stars left (like 30 min exposures)
6:01 a.m. - got to my room (after a brief attempt at astrophotography - the best pic)
Total observing time: ~11 hrs
Star total: 83 :) Hot damn :)

3:30 p.m. - Ginny arrived!! It's kinda funny - I'm on the Coudé Feed, Ginny's on WIYN, Bill & Brian are on the 4 meter - we all have gone or are going to GSU for grad school :) It's old home week at Kitt Peak :)

9:44 p.m. - DOMES ARE OPEN! Tonight I have lots of dimmer stars (longer exposures = not as hectic)
11:30 p.m. - Wow, my stars are REALLY jumping around!! It is quite windy out there and my scope is highly susceptible to the wind :( I have to stop for now...
12:57 a.m. - looks like it's calmed enough to let me take some data... I'm trying!
1:09 a.m. - DOMES CLOSED due to FOG - wow I just had a totally surreal experience shutting down! (a description)
4:11 a.m. - DOMES CLOSED due to high wind (they were closed anyways...)

I made my own lunch (of pasta!) as I'm going to get sick of the food here (15 days people!)
      chatted with Ginny
2:00 p.m. - went to the scope to fill the dewar - there was no liquid nitrogen tank!!! Turns out they took it to fill it up :)
took a walk with Ginny to the 4 meter, then back to WIYN to get her stuff started (her CCD is bigger and takes longer to read out than mine)
4:40 p.m. - suppertime!! The tacos weren't bad :)

6:08 p.m. - started my music... Dood, I'm gonna run out of stuff to listen to!
12:00 a.m. - refilled my dewar - it's been warming up at the end of the night (it only lasts about 12 hours) and so I thought I would nip the problem in the bud this time around!
1:10 a.m. - Ginny stopped by because her telescope is still on the fritz and she's restless (it happens when it's a nice night and you can't observe) but she got called back right when she got here...

5:20 p.m. - got to NOAO headquarters on the Univ. of Arizona campus

10:40 a.m. - I had my alarm go off (trying to be somewhat civil)
11:50 a.m. - got to the U of Arizona where I chatted with the education folks I know and then went out to lunch with Brian :) We went to a place called "Eric's"
Brian showed me the Mars Garden which is at LPL (the Lunar and Planetary Lab at the U of A) - apparently they got a bunch of money to make this and there was some calibration of the Mars Pathfinder there. The closest I'll ever be to the surface of Mars: Click for larger picture
1:30 p.m. - went to NOAO headquarters to check in for the 2 p.m. shuttle up the mountain
I convinced the guys I was going up the mountain with to stop at the grocery store :) Yay non-cafeteria food every meal!!
3:30 p.m. - got to the mountain and went right up to the 2.1 meter to get an introductory tour
4:30 p.m. - suppertime! I didn't like the pork chops but other stuff was good.
Sunset from a slightly different vantage point now Click for larger picture       Click for larger picture       Click for larger picture that bright thing on the horizon is actually the Moon!!
5:35 p.m. - got back up to the telescope to start getting things ready.
we had a few very minor glitches (there were some hot/dead pixels on the CCD right in some important spectral lines) and just getting stuff checked out (we officially weren't supposed to start observing til midnight (equipment checkout) but everything was fine so we did it!)
the 2.1 meter isn't quite as awesome to work with as the Feed, but it's okay - I'll post procedures soon)
8:02 p.m. - really started our first star
no one told me I had THREE different years in the dates on this page! Damn (2004/5/6) I've now changed them all if you're wondering...
      ugh, so tired...
5:05 a.m. - our last star of the night has ended!! Even though we have a little bit more dark time, we have no more stars on the program so we're headed to bed early ;)
5:44 a.m. - in bed :)
No music tonight...

Thursday, November 17, 2005
Day 10:   Click for larger picture no daytime weather pics today as I got up rather late ;) but I will say it was the first not-totally-clear day in days - cirrus-y clouds

2:30 p.m. - heh, I'm getting better :) But then again, that leaves little time for other stuff :(
2:45 p.m. - a siren went off on the mountain :( It kinda sounded like a tornado siren (hey, I'm a Midwesterner)... Then a fire engine siren... Guess it's time to get up. I found out later it was either a false alarm or a fire drill (I got conflicting reports :/ )
dinked around with e-mail and other stuff
4:35 p.m. - Suppertime!! Ooo, Mexican food! Chicken enchilada, spanish rice, bean tostada :) It's their best supper.

7:11 p.m. - got an e-mail from Doug (my advisor and Ginny's former advisor) asking us to look at a certain star (which we actually happened to be looking at right then!) - we looked for a while (the spectra were doing some stupid things...)
9:05 p.m. - we finally turned on some music - it's just Ginny's computer on shuffle... I don't want to keep up with what's on...
hmmm, it sure got windy - averaging about 41 mph... We close around 45... But that never happened :)
5:15 a.m. - darn scope won't let me adjust my star in the North/South direction :( Had to reboot computer :(
6:07 a.m. - finally finished our last star (we would have been done a half-hour ago if not for problem)
6:42 a.m. - finally done shutting down (I like the Feed - it doesn't take as long for stuff)
The sunrise Click for larger picture it's much brighter than I've been seeing it as I got to bed later than any other night...
6:53 a.m. - got into bed
Music - Ginny's computer decided our selections...

3:15 p.m. - meandered over to the visitor's center
4:00 p.m. - Ginny and I went to the scope for some pictures (you'll get to see them soon)

10:30 a.m. - ACK!! the maid lady came into my room!! Cripes - exactly what I needed after last night!! She had been mistakenly told my room was vacated (it was Ginny's that was) and I also had accidentally put up the little sign that requests maid service (I thought it was a lock)

It's gonna be my last night on the mountain!!
Day 15: eeeee, I'm so proud of me!!  Click for larger picture The pictures that make it are 1 2. Oh, this is at the solar telescope on a nicer day then today...
The daytime weather - well, not too good... Click for larger picture       Click for larger picture
10:00 a.m. - why am I up? And why did I decide my blackout shade had to be up?? I'm dumb.
1:30 p.m. - finally got up after fitful tossing and turning :(
2:15 p.m. - got signed up for a shuttle down the mountain tomorrow (11 a.m.), went up to the scope - whoa, people here!! They took my instrument down the mountain, made some adjustments, and brought it back - nothing will affect me, it's just stuff to help the next group on this scope.
3:00 p.m. - packed myself up for my journey across the state (going to visit my aunt and grandma in Yuma!)
4:35 p.m. - suppertime! Chicken Tahitian (fancy), rice, veggies
hunh - indicative of the night... Click for larger picture
5:35 p.m. - gathered up my crap to go sit in the scope with the internet - one can see that the clouds are thin, but they block out enough of the starlight so it is extremely inefficient to open - besides, all the stuff I want is at the beginning of the night :(
9:15 p.m. - started reducing data, finished an hour later - I think I did something bad cuz it only looks okay...
Pheeeww! Skunk smell :( Blegh. It was outside. It dissipated after a bit...
2:30 a.m. - finally went to bed :)
The evening's soundtrack - random crap ; Queen - Greatest Hits (maroon) ; Seal - IV ; playlist - Erika1
