So, on November 18/19, 2002, the annual Leonid Meteor shower peaked. It was early morning (4:45ish EST) and since we had been clouded out over the weekend, the GSU Astronomy Club decided we needed to make an outing to our lovely Hard Labor Creek Observatory (located, aptly, in Hard Labor Creek State Park). For some reason (I'm sure other people know it), we were contacted by CNN because they wanted to do a story on the meteor shower and it was arranged.
CNN got out to our locale (about an hour out of town) around 4 a.m. and started interviewing people.
(these are screen shots generously provided by Dave's dad, Daddy Berger)
First up were my very own roomies, Ginny and Angela. So that was fun.
Then it was one of our beloved professors, Dr. Todd Henry. He was good.
At this point we were supposed to be done, but apparently it was a slow news day, so we got some more time.
They put our fearless leader, El Presidente Dave Berger, on Headline News (but no one saw it!! we had no idea).
Then it was going to be just Dave again, but they decided that since there were still a bunch of us out there, braving the cold and sleep-deprivation induced delerium, they would have the whole group. Since I was standing right next to the son of the person providing the screen shots, I got to be in lots of them, so here are some interesting ones. Oh, and I did end up getting to say something and I'm pretty sure someone has it on tape, so if people want to see my little moment in the (early morning) sun, I'll have it.
Let's have a group shot!
From the left: Reporter Ann, Professor Todd Henry, dimly light Rajesh, roomie Ginny, roomie Angela, and look!! it's me in my star blanket! (I really wanted to turn around and "moon" everyone - there is a moon in the center of yon blankie), the yellow head in the background is Tatjana.
Here's me-of-the-big-grin next to fearless leader Dave. (I think this is my favorite picture) We must be having a good time...
...well, maybe not, aww heck, yes we are!! Angela (on left) is indicative thereof - I must just be too tired to smile at that point :)
Then someone was telling me that I looked like I hated Dave when he was talking, or maybe thought he was spewing crazy-talk, but really I'm not, they just caught me at a bad angle :(
See just a few seconds later... I look interested... Don't I?
I like this picture :) I look so dumb :)
So that is that, I hope you liked them. We all had a great time but sadly, I ended up not being able to go to sleep until that night because I had a presentation to do that day, 2 more classes (one of which I skipped) and lab to teach :( So all in all, I was up for 36 hours straight because of the Leonids. But I would totally do it again :)
