The cumulative number of stellar systems known within 10 pc (234 as of 1998.5) is shown with points. Assuming that the density of stars in a sphere of space surrounding the Sun with a 5 pc radius carries out to 10 pc, 130 systems in the larger sphere are anticipated to be missing from present catalogs. The four stars discovered to be within 10 pc via trigonometric parallax work by the RECONS effort (one published, three unpublished to date) are represented by open red circles.
